LARO. Derived from the Tagalog word MAGLARO, meaning TO PLAY.

is the design studio you come to to help you figure out why the heck you can’t nail down the exact visual you want to put to your brand’s name. We’ll tell you why: because everything that already exists out there was made for someone else β€” or it was made to fit in with an aesthetic that ties in the latest popular fonts with the latest trendy color scheme and a bunch of elements that do little to challenge the current visual status quo.

And hey, that’s not all bad! But you want something that screams you, and we want to make something that screams you. (It’s more fun that way!) And maybe that does entail using a trendy thing here or there, but matched with a special twist or an odd pairing. Or it’s something that totally defies an outdated design rule or whatever the norm is right now. Either way, we’re ready to explore that with you.

We thrive on versatility and reject the concept of having a signature style.

Clients send us moodboards looking for a vibe that we don’t usually see elsewhere.

TO PLAY.

"The word laro comes from the Tagalog word maglaro, meaning β€œto play.” As the studio name, it’s a word that has connections to my Filipino identity and my origins as a designer. Design started as a playground for me; it was a place where I could explore possibilities and feel free to be creative β€” and it still is."

The Founder

PAULINA LAROYA (SHE/HER)

My very first passion project was in 2007, when I created a webpage on Neopets dedicated to listing dozens of other Neopets players/creatives who also made cool shit (I was one of the pre-teens that didn’t go outside to play after school, and instead spent our time learning CSS and the ins and outs of Photoshop).

Fast forward to now, and I feel like that craving to highlight and help other creators, entrepreneurs, etc somehow manifested itself in the things I and this studio do now. After designing for more than half my life and working in design and communications for 8 years, I realize where I really thrive is using my creative-yet-somehow-mathematical brain to help people and brands piece together what they love and what they need.

When I’m not working with clients and fellow creatives, I’m doing pottery, in a dance class, listening to K-Pop, or doing a fun activity for my inner child :)

We also have a network of fellow designers, illustrators, copywriters, developers, and more who might join in for some projects depending on needs!
